LisaErika's own bio furnishes us with the following succinct formula of her musical style: Alternative Pop + Folk + Soul = LisaErika. It is a pretty good description… though not quite complete. You need to insert Black Gospel & Contemporary Christian into the sphere of musical influences.
It is very unfortunate that for some people the mere mention of the phrase Contemporary Christian Music causes them to set-up barriers rather than listen to the music… and yes, the message. Lisa has a beautiful voice and is a very accomplished singer; she also has a great deal to say.
In LisaErika's own words she says, "It is a great privilege and honor to help others press towards that high calling in Jesus the Christ (Philippians 3:13-14). What makes me tick is to know and trust that God uses me to reflect his power." LisaErika does this so successfully through thoughtfully crafted lyrics that speak of personal journey and experience.
LisaErika's musical odyssey includes listening to the likes of Gladys Knight and the Pips, Marvin Gaye and James Brown at an early age; then moving on to include country and pop artists such as Melissa Manchester, Barry Manilow, ABBA and Michael Murphy. Her musical influences range from Mahalia Jackson and Leontyne Price to Loretta Lynn, CeCe Winans, Bette Midler and Whitney Houston; to Cecilia Bartoli and Mary Cargile (her grandmother).
Though she began private voice lessons at age twelve, it was not until LisaErika was accepted into New York City's High School of Music & Art that she was introduced to the two genres that would define her vocal style: Classical Opera and Gospel. LisaErika has since performed in both gospel and operatic groups, including the Queensborough Wide Chorus; several chamber groups, the Music & Art Gospel Chorus and the Daryl Douglas Ensemble. She has also traveled and performed on the East Coast in several musicals both as a lead and an ensemble member.
Disillusioned is the title of LisaErika's debut CD though in truth LisaErika is anything but disillusioned: the eleven tracks deliver a satisfying diversity while staying true to her overall style. Warrior is the first offering, a truly powerful piece that begs to be an anthem for just about anyone who is unafraid and proud of it.
Whatever and The Best Way the second and third songs on the CD fit very nicely into the Contemporary Christian format and should do very well in this market. Disillusioned and Safe In His Arms reveal LisaErika's folk and pop influences; both songs should appeal to a broad audience.
My Father's Place is a very upbeat offering that will stay with you long after the music has stopped. I admit that the song has got me hooked with its very catchy beats and memorable lyrics. The CD concludes with a remix version of Warrior that highlights LisaErika's vocal range.
LisaErika's Disillusioned is the kind of CD that you could have playing in repeat mode while you entertain company. Inevitably your guests would ask, "Who is that?" which would almost certainly be followed by some variant of, "Wow, what a voice!"
The producers of the album, Mark Partis and Dorsey (Rob) Robinson have done an excellent job. The sound quality is first rate as are the accompanying musicians. Each track moves seamlessly into the next; each seems to belong exactly where it is, giving the entire CD a very nice flow. Disillusioned is an immensely listenable release.
