North Boston's Eileen Rose is a quietly intense artist, her voice cannot hide the subtle rapture behind her melodic lyrical offerings. Eileen Rose writes and performs with a poet's heart and story-teller's soul; her songs all have strong narrative quality and substance.
What is so enjoyable is that Eileen Rose accomplishes this without sounding heavy or dark: Arlo Guthrie, Bob Dylan and Tom Waits come to mind. There is a feeling of hope, defiance and victory behind even their darkest songs. Long Shot Novena, the album's title track, is about revelation and transcendence; there is a true sense of rapture that never overwhelms while inviting the listener to share powerful emotions.
Good poetry and songwriting accomplish this with economy: less is more. Eileen Rose uses her words effectively, each is a powerful brush stroke on an emotion-hued canvas. The effect is immediacy; there is no waiting period to uncover the soulful substance of each song.Long Shot Novena is Eileen Rose's second solo album after her highly acclaimed debut release Shine Like it Does. Prior to her solo career, Rose was frontwoman for the bands, Daisy Chain, Medici Slot Machine and Fledgling. Eileen has toured with similarly respected artists Ryan Adams, the Pernice Brothers, Ron Sexsmith, Eddi reader, Ani DiFranco and Turin Brakes. Currently on tour with Frank Black, Eileen Rose is not to be missed.
A novena is a prayer candle with strong personal significance. Eileen Rose's Long Shot Novena is the answer for those seeking an artistically potent album by an emotionally charged artist who is as tender as she is tough.

And I will fill this house with glory
This is my Day
Your long shot novena's working for me
And I'm as light as a feather
Pure like water, floating away
And I have bragged about my free will
That's when it failed
How I drag around your home grown truths
And thoughts like that will
Take the wind out of anybody's sails
I cut my heel and headed homeward
With the subtle feeling
I'd just been pushed around
But if I'm shy as a baby, weary of battle
I'm going to ground
And we break our hearts and I think we want to
'Cause it's coming up close
To something like wonder
And it cuts that fear we could just drift away
Weak to the bone and dead in the middle
With nothing left to say
What a funny day… what a funny day
And your rising… rising
